Cameron The Sandman was founded by Owen Cameron, whose story reflects the determination and work ethic that still define our company today. Owen was born in Portage, Quebec, Canada in 1917 and moved to the United States at the age of 12. One of ten children, he settled in the Detroit area and worked hard from a young age, holding a paper route while attending school at the University of Detroit Catholic School.

After purchasing a truck and delivering coal, Owen was introduced to the flooring trade when Irving Raskin offered him the opportunity to learn the craft of sanding hardwood floors. He quickly developed a passion for the work and the pride that comes with transforming homes through skilled craftsmanship. Owen later served in the United States Army during World War II. After returning home, he married Mae Fillion and together they raised six children. His dedication to family, hard work, and quality craftsmanship became the foundation of the business he started in 1936.
